Lily's art

Here is my first embroidery project. I was first inspired a few months back by Amanda's embroidery of her son's art. I thought it was a brilliant idea. The challenge was getting Lily to draw something, as she isn't much of a drawer. She'd much rather color a coloring page. I finally got her to draw a picture of her Grandmother's house. I think she did a pretty good job. That big flower on the right is a sunflower, because Maw-maw Brenda grew some sunflowers on the side of her house this summer. I made this as a birthday gift Maw-maw Brenda, which is this Friday. I sure hope she likes it...what Grandmother wouldn't?

Now that I've completed this project I'm egar to do more. I found embroidering in bed right before falling asleep very relaxing. I think I'll work on something for my Grandmother as a Christmas gift. I'm planning on trying out one of the free patterns on Pattern Bee, probably this one. I think it would be nice on a pillow.

pom-pom garland

Look what I made! After the wonderful suggestion from Rebecca pointing me to My Paper Crane's blog entry on pom-pom garland, I couldn't help myself. I ran to the Dollar Tree to pick up some pom-poms. I bought all they had (6 bags), then went next door to Hobby Lobby for more (the Dollar Tree pom-poms were the best, BTW). I love it! I think this garland will be the perfect addition to our colorful, happy Christmas tree. Now I can't wait to decorate it, once I finish all the popsicle stick snowflake/dragon fly ornaments we're in the process of making. It really didn't take me all that long to make the garland. The process was much faster than I thought it would be. Stringing pom-poms is the perfect mindless task to do while vegging out in front of the TV. I hope I made enough. If not, no problem - I like mindless projects like this!

Some Christmas crafting

Lily and I have been working on Christmas ornaments. I've decided that this year our tree will be filled with homemade, non-breakable ornaments. I'm more worried about Oreo climbing and knocking over the tree than I am about Alex undecorating it. This is what we've come up with so far. The top picture is of some foam snowflakes I picked up at Target in an ornament kit. They're okay. I like the popsicle stick snowflakes much better. I love all the bright colors and sparkle. We've already gone through a 12 pack of glitter pens. In looking for doodads to glue onto our ornaments in my craft stash I found a whole other pack of craft sticks, so think we'll be gluing more snowflakes tonight. I haven't decided what else to put on the tree, but it should be interesting. Right now I'm trying to come up with something to string around the tree, colored macaroni perhaps?

Yo-yo's, yo-yo's everywhere!

Look what I found! I started this yo-yo quilt back when I was in college. I believe my original intent was to make a quilt for my first child, whenever that may be. All that I completed was a strip about a foot wide and 54" long. Maybe at this point I'll finish it for my first grandchild.

At the time that I started this I was working at the campus art museum which was holding a quilt exhibit. I was inspired, though there was nothing like this in the exhibit. My grandmother gave me the yo-yo template that belonged to her grandmother. Though I didn't put much thought into it at the time, I am so glad that I have this now! I'll always cherish that template. (you can see it in the bin of yo-yo's)

I think I have enough yo-yo's to finish this quilt. I just might do that!

Blah, blah, blah

That pretty much sums up how I feel. I would love to feel creative and into the holiday spirit, but it ain't happening. I'm blaming it all on pregnancy hormones. This time around I have been way more moody and bitchy. I hate it. I know, I could change my attitude, fake it until I make it, but that's too much work. I'd rather wallow in my misery. Blah, that's me.

Re-reading that last paragraph makes me sad. What's my problem? I'm usually pretty optimistic about things. This totally isn't me. Changes need to be made. Really, living in a constant 'blah' state is no way to live. I'm gonna pick myself up and MAKE things better. If I don't make changes now, then I'll turn out like those bitter, grumpy people I dislike being around.

Okay, now on to something more positive. Talking about my house and looking at house porn makes me happy. Here are some of my favorites.

I LOVE this room. I love the mix of neutrals with the soft green on the walls. I love the bamboo and other natural textures. I love the brown toile in the draperies. I love everything about it. I want this room.

I like this kitchen. I've always been a fan of white cabinets. We currently have bizarro two-toned cabinets (honey & pickled green) that we will attempt to refinish, but if that doesn't work out we're painting them white. That island in the middle is really nice. I think I like this most because it is do-able. Not too big, not too small, just right. Oh, I'm also a sucker for plaid.

The more I look at this picture the more I want to skip the whole cabinet refinishing and just go for the white. I'll have to work on my wood grain-loving husband...

I think I'd like a calming bedroom like this. We recently painted our hideous master bathroom this pretty blue/green color. I was planning on painting the bedroom a rich brown, but may continue the bathroom color into the bedroom, then use chocolate brown as accents, kind of going for the look of the first room I posted. I'll do a chocolate upholstered headboard, the bamboo shades with the brown toile curtains, use my off white coverlet and lots of neat throw pillows in shades of blue-green and brown. I know my husband will love that (he so hates my throw pillows)!

And now from dreamland to the real world. This is one of my favorite views in my house. This is what I see if I'm laying on my left side in bed. I guess what I like about this is the mixture of the wood floors with the armoire and the big white crown molding. It's also nice how the light filters through the sheers of the french doors. It reminds me of a hallway in an old house.

Of course there are lots of eye sores I'd like do away with in my house. Besides the freakish cabinets I'd like to do away with this spiral staircase, but until we can afford a contractor to build a new 'real' staircase it will have to do. I think I'll try repainting it and covering the treads with burlap. These stairs lead up to my sewing studio and the attic. Oh, and that sofa is no longer there. We had the old sofa stashed there for a while when we first got our new one.

And then there's the floating mantle. I don't know what was going on when this was designed, but it's weird. (Please excuse my ripeness, but Alex was in there at the time.) I'm thinking for a cheap and easy solution I can just paint the part beneath and around the mantle white, so that it blends better. I think that will make it look less floaty. I know that we'll have to eventually remove the mantle and the the fireplace surround. But I'm not in the mood to put that much work into it right now.

Okay, I guess I've blabbed about my house enough. Ahh, I feel better already!

BARF!

What a wasted weekend! I contracted the stomach virus Lily brought home on Thursday. This has not been a fun weekend. At least I feel well enough at the moment to drag my butt out of the bed to let the world know. Hopefully this will be over soon.

I'm so weak! (and bored)

I couldn't resist the Gambler's Sale at Fabric.com. I bought more fabric, like I need that. My intention is to use these for the maternity tops that I do desperately need. They were a really good price, but I'm not so sure I'm going to like the tie dyed prints splayed across my pregnant boobs and belly. I'm not really a prints on the top kind of gal. My upper body is the half I like to de-emphasize, not draw attention to with a neon sign. If the prints are really hideous in real life, then I'll make Lily something from them. Little girls LOVE (at least mine does) gaudy, loud fabrics. At least I was smart enough to order one safe fabric.

The lilac solid is a brushed slinky and tie dyed fabrics are a jersey knit.

Despite this being a night with a puking kid (first lice, now vomit - my washing machine is getting a workout) I was able to be a little bit productive on the sewing front. I have my altered maternity pattern traced and cut out with a washed piece of fabric ready to go. I hope to get a top cut out tomorrow night, and if I'm lucky I may start sewing it!

Maternity clothes

Am I ever in need! I'm getting bigger by the day and my closet is sparse. Usually at this point I'm still wearing regular clothes, but right before I got pregnant I gave away all my "fat" clothes because I had lost 20-something pounds and had no intention of needing those clothes again. I'm planning on making myself some maternity tops. I've been looking around for clothes, but nothing really floats my boat. I know that all the cute tops won't fit over my enormous bust, so I don't want to even bother. My only solution is to pull out the sweedish tracing paper and start making some modifications to my existing patterns. The first step is making a full bust adjustment, then a maternity adjustment. It should be simple enough, I hope. If not, then I'm in a pickle. Since I got a pretty good fit with this top right before I got pregnant, I think I'll start with this. If it comes out okay then I'll have a Mc-sew along and make a few tops assembly style. That's my plan, anyway.

Nit Picking HELL!!!

Aren't we lucky? We're infested with LICE! What a freaking pain in the ass this is. We've been dealing with it since we got the call from school on Thursday. Since then I've been doing lots of laundry, vacuuming, and nit picking.

I thought this wasn't going to be a big deal since Lily was the only one who had them. I did the lice treatment, washed all the bed linens, all her previously worn clothing, sprayed the mattresses, etc. Well, I guess I didn't get all the little bastards because now I have them. Last night we washed hair, slathered up with conditioner, then sat down for a good old fashioned nit picking. The good news is that there were way less lice this time around than there were on Thursday. Also, I only had very few, mostly one one side of my head, the side I sleep on. I think when Lily laid on my pillow this weekend she transferred some onto the pillow, then they crawled onto my head.

As a preventative measure, I cut all of Alex's curls off. He is now a short haired little boy. Thank goodness curly hair hides all the flaws because I sure as hell am no hair stylist! I know that it would be a royal pain in the ass to try to pick nits out of a 17 month old wiggly boy's hair. As long as he doesn't wear any of Lily's headbands any time soon he should be okay.

So this will be my life for the next week or so - nit picking every night along with daily washing of the bedding. Unfortunately this leaves very little time for anything fun, or anything other than lice related activities. Aren't you jealous?
