the first of many

Black_white_skirt_1

Brace yourself, this will be the summer of the skirt, part deux. I am so in love with this pattern! Even though it is gored, it is super easy and sews up quickly. The thing I like most is the waistband, which has elastic only in the back - LOVE IT!! I highly recommend this pattern if you want to make some really Cute Skirts. I already have another one cut out waiting to be sewn up.

If you look real close you can see that I used bias binding on the hem.  Thanks Lera for the idea!

version 4.0

It's done, my new pleated bag.  I guess the third time wasn't the charm, but the fourth one sure is!  Okay, so there may be a 5th version to correct a few issues, but overall I'm very pleased.

Pink_bag_2

This one is mine, all mine.  I already have it packed with 'Beki stuff' and have been proudly wearing on my shoulder.

Now comes the fun part where I play in my sewing studio to pick out fabrics to make a few more of these babies.  Yes, I'm almost giddy!!

It doesn't take much to entertain us.

The house is fairly clean, the floors are mopped, the beds are made, the dishes are done, and the laundry is in progress.  Life is good.

Corners of my Home, Thursday

Hmm, which corner to show?  I've already revealed most of them (the more interesting ones, at least).  This week is tough.  Not many of my corners are photo worthy.  I'll let you in on a little secret - I can't, and DON'T do it all.  I'm talking about crafting, working, keeping a clean house, being a good mother, cooking, blogging, whatever.  Lately I've been in crafty mode, so everything else has slipped.  See?  That's my huge pile of clean laundry that needs folding.

Laundry

And that's my bed that hasn't been made in days.

Mardi Gras beads are scattered in just about every room.

And the dishes?  Don't even get me started.

Dishes

Most all of my crafting happens on the weekends (which is when I tell myself I'm going to clean), then I space out blogging about what I made during the week.  Most of the time I've already written the posts on the weekend too!   During the week I mostly read blogs, comment on a few, and try to wade through my emails.  Since I've been so crafty lately, the house has suffered.  Poor neglected house!  My meals have also suffered.  I can't tell you the last time I made a "real" home cooked meal.  Instead of rushing home to post a blog entry (guilty of that), I should be cooking a healthy meal for my family.

It's moments like these that I feel like pulling the plug on it all (well, crafting and blogging, that is).  Don't worry, I don't think I could do that, but it does cross my mind.  Over the next few weeks I think I'm going to pull back a bit, clean my house, get things in order, love on my babies, cook some good meals, and possibly sleep.  It's time.  I don't plan on going on a break, just posting less often, for a little while, until I miss the comments too much (tee hee).  See ya around!

I promise, this is not where I intended this post to go, but it kind of went there.  C'est la vie!  Oh, and we're eating take out tonight.

Throw me somethin' Mister!

Happy Mardi Gras!  We just got in from spending the day in New Roads eating, visiting with family, and enjoying the Mardi Gras parades.  I've created a flickr set if you want to check it out.  Here are a few highlights:

Weekend Projects

I had quite a productive weekend.  I don't feel like I spent a lot of time sewing, but I sure completed a lot of projects.

Made4china

Made For China blankets & barrettes are completed and on their way.

Wallets

A couple of snappy card holders.  I actually made about 6 of these, but only two were keepers.  I need lots of practice sewing curves.  Thankfully, Lily loves the cast-offs.  I put the keepers in my etsy shop.

And last but not least, my new bag!  Oh, how I love it!!  Isn't it cute?  This looks more summer than spring, but at the first sign of warm weather I'm breaking this baby out.  Yes, I'm tired of winter.  That orange & blue combo makes me oh, so happy!

Try and try again

1st_try

Last week's WIP.  It didn't turn out so well.  Too small, just not quite right.  I didn't even finish it - straight to the scrap basket it went.

2nd_try

Attempt #2, a little bigger, a little wider, a lot fonkier.  Scratch that one too.  #1 didn't look so bad after this one.  Back to the drawing board.

3rd_try

Maybe that saying, "third time's a charm", is right, eh?  It's still far from perfect, but I'm finally on the right track.  I know this looks a lot like my other bags, but I promise, it's different!!

Fluffly Flower Tutorial

Brooch

I know that there are about a bazillion flower tutorials out there, but I thought I'd share my way of making them.  It's really quite simple.

Start out with about a 4" square of fabric - this will make one petal cluster for a flower of approximately the same size.  You will need about 6-8 of these squares.  For this particular flower I used 7 squares.

Step1

Fold in half.

Step2

Fold in half again, matching short sides.

Step3

Next, cut out an ice cream cone shape, with the folded corner of your square as the point of your cone.  I used pinking shears, but this isn't necessary.

Step4

When you open it up it should look something like this:

Step5

Next, sew a circle around the center, just a simple running stitch.

Step6_2

Pull threads together, like a little drawstring, tie the two ends of the thread into a knot, then cut off the strings.  It should look something like the photo below.  I've learned that the bigger the circle, the more gathered the petal clusters become.

Step7

Repeat these steps for 6-8 petal clusters.  The more petal clusters, the fluffier the flower.

Step8

Once you get them all gathered, string them on some thread.  I like to use a double strand for strength.

Step9

Pull the thread together, like you did for each petal cluster.  Tie in a knot and cut thread.  At this point your flower should look like this:

Img_1740

The front and the back should look pretty much the same, so choose which ever side looks best to you.  If you're making this as a brooch, then sew a pin onto some feltStep10.

Hot glue the felt onto the back of the flower, or you can sew the flower onto your project.

Step11

To finish, sew (or hot glue) a button to the front.  Voila!  A fluffy flower brooch.

Step12

I hope that was clear.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
