NOT looking like christmas
The last thing I feel like doing right now is decorating for Christmas. The choatic state of my kitchen has something to do with it. I wish I had doors to close this room off, but I don't. Insead, I have two large openings to my living room. Yay! This really shouldn't keep me from spreading the holiday cheer throughout the rest of the house, but it does.
Yes, we're insane for taking on a DIY kitchen remodel during the holidays. And yes, we have messy cabinets (that I get to look at every single time I walk into the kitchen - and see from the street through the windows). Not being able to close cabinet doors is driving me crazy! I know that once my two-toned freakazoid kitchen cabinets are painted white it will all be worth it, but until then I'll be in a slightly foul mood, okay?

that's awfully brave of you! Maybe you just really didn't want to decorate for Christmas. I'm sure it'll be all worth it when it's done!

I too lived through a DIY kitchen remodel (my husband gutted and rebuilt the whole thing) but that we before two kids, so who cares if we eat out every night, right? In the end, no matter how you do it, it will all be worth it. I can't wait to see the after photos.

You could tack up some cute fabric and do some ties to hold them back (velcro maybe) for when you need to get in there....

Ohmygosh, that's why, after three years, I still have the ugly brown cabinets I had when we bought this house and planned to paint the kitchen... sigh. Guess we should have done it before we moved in, huh? Anyway, you're already halfway there, so hang in, you know it's going to be so worth it when you're all done and beaming at your new stylin' kitchen. And I'll be green with envy. :0)

I feel for you ... My whole house is a DIY fiasco. Remember my cabinet that fell off the wall and broke the stove? Still sitting in the box in my formal living room and all the food that was in the cabinet before it fell is in a storage container on my kitchen floor. That's the ONE thing that MUST be done before Christmas. (It's been two months already for Pete's sake!)

Ohhh...you will HAVE to show before and after pictures! I love DIY...specifically of kitchens! It amazes me how somewhat small changes (paint, accessories, lighting, etc) can make such a huge difference in kitchen spaces. I hope you are able to get in the Christmas Spirit soon! :D

man, painting kitchen cabinets is the worst! That was the first project I undertook when we bought this house. Nightmare.

Can't wait to see the after!
I have to say that my brown is even uglier than your brown. And much more dated. But every time I get up the gusto to paint in there, it seems like I'm pregnant and can't use oil paint.
I've been googling whether cabinets can be done in latex. It's not so much the painting I dread, it's the masking. And the removing of the hardware. And the chaos. ARGH the chaos!
It will all be worth it, though. Yours are going to look fab, I just know it!

I feel your pain. My kitchen is visible from the front door, and I am not so good at getting the dishes done in a timely manner. Anyone who ever rings my doorbell knows instantly that I would rather make things all day than wash a dish ;-)

I so want to paint my cabinets white but I have been too chicken to start that project. Hopefully in the new year it will be done.
Good luck.

Just think about how great it'll be when it's done.

I completely understand! lol..Hang in there. Your new cabinets will look great!

I'm Sure it will be worth it in the end. In the meantime you could get some Holiday Fabric and hang on a tension rod or yarn in you cabinet opening. That way you have some holiday cheer in the kitchen and don't have to look at the inside of your cabinets. Happy Remodeling

Isn't it funny how holidays bring out the "must finish" home projects? We are going to be painting our kitchen in the next week and though I'd really love to sand and paint the cupboards, I don't think that will be happening this winter. Try not to stress too much about the reno Beki *hug* I can't wait to see the finished results!

I so feel your pain sweetie! Foul mood completely acceptable- but once it's all pretty and white you'll be so glad you did it.

Good luck! It'll be worth it when it's done. Says she who has put off doing her own kitchen for 6 years!!!
I'm sure it will be lovely when it's finished and look forward to seeing the photos.

It does seem like major projects always happen when I am the busiest, maybe we all work best under pressure. Can't wait to see your beautiful kitchen!

Ohhhh! Let's give you ahandclap of praise! Because you are DEFINITELY my shero! Wow..you're so brave. The whole cabinet thing sucks! Well maybe this will make you feel better. We plan to redo our whole house! Yeah..crazy I know..and we're starting soon. Let's keep each other sane!

painting my kitchen cabinets was the most grueling diy project i ever took on. the most satisfying, too. hang in there, beki. it is sooooooo worth it.
Posted by: erin | December 01, 2007 at 06:59 PM
Maybe you can use it to your advantage by covering the open shelves with holiday-themed fabric? Make some cutesy curtains or something and just put them up when people are coming over? Sorry you're having a tough time with it, but, like you said, it will be worth it. :)
btw, if you have a moment, I'm having a giveaway on my blog...stop by and enter if you can! :)

I hope it is worth it! We are due to start a kitchen cabinet redo in early spring and I'm nervous. I have no idea how people survive through major home renovations, esp. in the kitchen!
Posted by: Amy | December 03, 2007 at 01:00 PM
Oh hon, you poor thing! Yes, you are crazy for renovating in december, but I'm sure it will turn out awesome!! :) hee hee! Just teasing ya!

Right there with ya on the house projects during the holidays. We're trying to get a ton of projects done in order to get our house refinanced, and it just feels nuts. I was planning on making all these presents, and now I'm feeling like I'll be lucky to get a few done. Today I'm hemming our new curtains instead. Best wishes on your kitchen though, it WILL be really nice to have that done.
