I never showed you, did I?

quilt

I'm talking about the quilt that I'm sure y'all are sick of by now.  Yes, I did manage to finish it last week.  I finished sewing on the binding while watching the LOST season finale.  The quilt has been washed and dried and is now full of wrinkley goodness.  It's been living in it's intended home, but I'm not sure that I ever want to eat on it.  I feel kind of silly putting all that work into a tablecloth, but I do love it.  I love glancing at it while I'm working in the kitchen.  I love the symmetry.  I love touching it.  I love how fresh and clean it looks.  Yes, this simple little quilt makes me very happy!

ready to begin

future quilt

Last week I had some good mail.  The fabrics I chose for my kitchen table quilt arrived.  I have no idea what kind of quilt I'll make, but I do know that I want to use lots of white along with the fabrics.  Maybe border each block in white?  I don't know, I need to do some research.  I'm no quilter, so whatever design I choose will be very simple.

quilt inspiration

When I decided to use the tea towel as my inspiration I was still a little if-y on the colors, but now that I have the fabrics in my hands, I have complete confidence that this will work!  I can see it now...

While I was perusing etsy, I happened to come across these plates, so I bought them.  Won't these look great on the wall?  Yes, I plan to fill the walls with pretty patterned plates like in the March issue of Martha Stewart Living - have you seen it? I can't wait to have my kitchen done!

bags

One last thing - I did a little shop update with my latest bags.  I think I must have been in a bold red/pink/orange mood.  Isn't it funny how that happens?

quilt love

my gandmother's quilt

With tomorrow kicking off Quilting Month and all the quilt love, quilt planning, and quilt making that's been popping up in blog land lately, I've decided that it's time I finished this quilt.  I've talked about it before, it was made by my Maw-maw for my mom, out of clothes that belonged to my mom and my aunt.  All I have to do is finish the hand quilting, which I think I can manage.  This will be the perfect project to work on in the evenings when I'm watching TV.

Look at all these wonderful old prints!  It's neat to think that these used to be my mom's dresses when she was a little girl.

And those colors, wow, they're sure to put a smile on my face!

Yesterday while blog surfing I came across this blog put together by Shanna and Patricia.  I'm no quilter, but I couldn't help but join in.  There's still room for participants, if you're interested.  Go check it out.

Treasures

60s_quilt

Whenever I go to my Grandma's, I don't leave empty handed.  My recent visit was no exception.  All the quilt talk from the expo reminded her of one that she started back in the late 60's when my mom was a girl.  She made this quilt using my mom and her sister's dresses.  She completed one for my mom's sister, but never got around to finishing my mom's.  All that is left to do on it is some quilting.  And guess what?  She gave it to me!  It had been packed up in a box for YEARS!!!  I LOVE it!  It was fun looking at it with my mom and grandma.  They were reminiscing about which fabrics went with which outfits.  Look at those fabrics - some of them are so neat.  I think I'll take my time and finish hand quilting this quilt (after 40 years of incompletion, who's in a hurry?).

But that wasn't all.  Here are some quilt pieces she started way back when.  I'm not sure what I'll do with these.

She also gave me this old apron.  I can remember playing dress up with this.  I was surprised she still had it.

An embroidered table runner that  belonged to my great aunt Hazel.  It's in pretty bad shape, but I may be able to salvage some of the embroidery to use in some kind of project.

Last but not least are these table linens that my Maw maw remembers eating lunch on every Sunday afternoon.

She also pulled out a zip lock bag filled with old quilting patterns that belonged to her grandma from the 20's-40's.  I didn't get any pictures, but they were so cool.  I think the most interesting part was the advertising on the backs of the patterns - ladies in flapper dresses.  Most of the patterns are from magazines, some were mail order, and one was from a package of batting.  These will be mine one day, after my grandma shows them off, of course.  I need to do some research on how to best preserve and store them.  When I get my hands on them I'll be sure to blog about it , no doubt!

Quilts Galore!

Mosaic8672858

I had a great weekend.  On Saturday morning the girls and I (I love that I have girls!) went to my Grandma's to spend the day.  She invited us over because there was a quilt show going on in town that she thought I'd like to see.  Well, duh!  It was the most perfect day for such an event, a beautiful, mild fall day.  The town where my Grandma lives, Ponchatoula, is the most quaint little old town.  The main street is lined with old buildings which are now mostly antique stores.  The set up of the quilt show was most interesting.  Lines were strung from pole to pole along the main street with the quilts hanging by clothes pins.  The parking lane was blocked off so that you could stroll along the street to look at the quilts.  Some of them were old, some new, some machine quilted, and some hand quilted.  I was most amazed at the old hand quilted ones.  Gosh, they must have gone blind doing some of those!  Inspiring, indeed.

Before we left the town, my Grandma had to show me that my Great Grandparents names were on a monument in front of the town hall.  It was a monument honoring the strawberry farmers from that town.  I thought it was pretty cool.  Even though I've never lived there, I can help but feel a great sense of connection to this little old town.

Of course the best part of the day was spending time with my Grandma, my Mom, and my girls.  I need to make a point of doing this more often.  I'm so lucky to have this time with them!
