During the last few Thursday night sewing sessions with Cathy I’ve been working on some things for Ceci. In my mind I like to think of them as her late summer early fall collection, ha ha!
It all started with a simple diaper cover. Now that Ceci is on the move, I wanted to make her some simple clothes that she could easily crawl in without getting tangled up. There’s nothing more pitiful than a frustrated crawling baby stuck in her own dress! I used Dana’s diaper cover pattern for a few of these, then I tried out the Ruby’s Bloomers pattern from Weekend Sewing by Heather Ross. They’re all super cute.
Well, I actually tried Dana’s pattern first without using a serger, which was a total fail. Cathy suggested I use the bloomers pattern, which I did with success. The bloomer pattern is what pushed me to try the elastic thread. Then I got brave enough to pull out my serger, which made Dana’s pattern super easy, so I made 2 more of them. It was an all around learning experience!
The dress is the chic chic dress from too sweets patterns. You might remember that I made some of these a few years ago for Ava. It’s a simple gathered neck dress pattern that can be whipped out in no time, especially if you use a serger. I made the orange one first, then I remembered that I usually make mods to the pattern, namely scooping the neck out a bit. I also like to shorten and widen the sleeves, but that’s just my preference. And look – more elastic thread! It works great for gathering a sleeve.
Along with the neck and sleeve modifications I shortened the pattern a little bit for the crawl factor (though she’ll be walking any day now – she’s been threatening with tiny steps). I think these will get lots of use in the next few months. I can totally see the chambray one with stripey tights and a long sleeve shirt for cooler weather, which probably won’t happen until this is too small for her.
I’m not sure that I’m completely done yet. That orange one and the chambray might need a little something, maybe some stitches along the hem or a few appliquéd crochet flowers. Maybe, maybe not. Either way, I love them all, especially on my little busy body!!
